Box Volume Calculator
cubic feet, inches, liters & gallons

Enter a box’s length, width and height in any unit — even mixed, like 2 ft × 18 in × 30 cm — and get its volume in cubic feet, cubic inches, liters, gallons and cubic meters at once. Fractions such as 12 1/2 work too.

How it works

How to calculate the volume of a box.

A box (a rectangular prism, or cuboid) holds length × width × height. The only rule is that all three sides use the same unit — which this calculator handles for you.

Volume = Length × Width × Height
  1. Measure the three sides. Use the inside of the box for how much it holds, the outside for shipping.
  2. Use one unit for all three, or pick a unit per side above and let the calculator convert.
  3. Multiply them together. Inches give cubic inches (in³), centimeters give cubic centimeters (cm³).
  4. Convert if you need to: in³ ÷ 1,728 = ft³ · ft³ × 7.48 = US gallons · cm³ ÷ 1,000 = liters.
Worked examples

Three boxes, worked out.

Inches → cubic feet

18 × 12 × 10 in = 2,160 in³
2,160 ÷ 1,728 = 1.25 ft³
= 35.4 L · 9.35 US gal

Centimeters → liters

40 × 30 × 25 cm = 30,000 cm³
30,000 ÷ 1,000 = 30 L
= 1.06 ft³

Mixed units

2 ft × 18 in × 30 cm
= 24 × 18 × 11.81 in = 5,102 in³
= 2.95 ft³ · 83.6 L

FAQ

Box volume questions.

How do you calculate the volume of a box?
Multiply length × width × height, with all three in the same unit. A box 18 in long, 12 in wide and 10 in high holds 18 × 12 × 10 = 2,160 cubic inches. The calculator converts mixed units for you.
How do I convert cubic inches to cubic feet?
Divide by 1,728, because a cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches. For example, 2,160 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 1.25 ft³.
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?
One cubic foot is about 7.48 US gallons (7.48052) or 6.23 UK gallons. So a box of 1.25 ft³ holds about 9.35 US gallons of liquid.
How do I convert cubic centimeters to liters?
Divide by 1,000: one liter is exactly 1,000 cm³. A 40 × 30 × 25 cm box is 30,000 cm³, which is 30 liters.
Should I measure the inside or the outside of the box?
Measure the inside to find how much a box can hold. Measure the outside for shipping, because carriers bill on the external size — and most round every fraction of an inch up to the next whole inch.
Can I use different units for each side?
Yes. Each of length, width and height has its own unit, so 2 ft × 18 in × 30 cm works. Everything is converted to meters internally, so the result is the same as converting by hand.
Can I enter fractions?
Yes. Decimals (12.5), fractions (1/2) and mixed numbers (12 1/2) are all accepted.
Is box volume the same as dimensional weight?
No. Volume is the space a box takes up. Dimensional weight is a billing weight carriers work out from that volume — for FedEx, UPS (Daily Rates) and USPS (parcels over 1 ft³) it’s cubic inches ÷ 139, rounded up to the next pound. Use the dimensional weight calculator for shipping costs.
